Flamingo in the Snow
There was a flamingo who was lost in a storm
She fell asleep all nice and warm
But when she awoke her friends did fly
They migrated away without a goodbye
She looked around and no one was near
But she flew through the storm without fear
The rain fell hard but it was over soon
Her pink wings watered with the tears of the monsoon
And she flew North but she did not know
And soon she saw the sight of snow
Her frosty wings began to shake
At the sight of a white snowflake
It seemed she had flown so far
Somehow guided by a North Star
And she found herself in ice and snow
It was Antarctica she saw below
She flew on a sheet of ice
And the penguins greeted her very nice
The flamingo never saw birds like these
How could they stand this chilly breeze?
Then the penguins became quite still
And they bowed in the silent chill
The Emperor Penguin with a crown of gold
Looked at the flamingo and his heart was sold
She was the prettiest bird he had ever seen
He desired for her to be his Queen
“Welcome to my icy kingdom,
What part of the world have you flown from?”
“I am from the South where it is warm
But I was lost and tossed in a storm
I have never seen this much snow
I do not know where to go.”
She looked at the Emperor
Whose smile flattered her
He was so kind and sweet
And he fell in love with her in a heartbeat
He blushed at her wings so pink
The sight of her made his heart sink
He gave her fish to eat
But saw she was cold and rose from his seat
He got off his icy throne
And the flamingo stood like stone
“You look cold, my dear
Follow my lead, and keep me near
A little dancing and you have nothing to fear.”
The Emperor began to tango
With this hot pink flamingo
And her cold feet began to get warm
She forgot all about the storm
She danced with him, no longer cold
And in his arms her heart was sold
All the penguins marched to the beat
Upon that white icy sheet
But then the ice began to crack
And the Emperor fell back
He slipped into the sea
And an orca erupted suddenly
And the Emperor was on the whale’s back
But the flamingo began to attack
That killer whale could not stand that beak
That poked his eye and made his tears leak
So the whale gave up his snack
And the flamingo flew the penguin back
She had saved his life,
And he asked her to be his wife
He proposed with a beautiful rock
A shimmering pebble he found on a walk
He said it was formed by a tear
Of a mermaid somewhere near
Her tears are washed on the shore
In the moonlight cooled into this magic ore
And if it is skipped on the sea
This silver rock will turn the waters silver, you see
And if a human swam in the waters of silver, you know
Their shadow would be painted silver and glow
And Death’s eyes could not see them and they would be free
From Time’s hands and be given immortality
All the penguins looked on to see
If the flamingo would accept with glee
But the flamingo said,
“I wish I could stay
But I must leave and fly away
It is too cold for me to stay here
My heart has never felt so clear
My wings are cold, but you have melted my heart
My dear Emperor we shall never be apart
Think of me when I am gone
Even at night, I shall be your dawn
Though with me you cannot fly
This is not goodbye.”
The Emperor began to cry,
“Though I cannot fly
My heart has never flown so high
I’ve never had to say goodbye
But if somewhere in me is a great sky
You will not be far, but always nearby.”
“Where I go,” she said, “would be too warm for you
And the skies are bright and blue
But I’ll return and when I do
I will bring back a rock from Peru.
And though it is hot there, my heart will be cold
Until your eyes I do behold.”
She embraced the Emperor with her pink wings
And her farewell tugged at their heartstrings
That pink bird flew back to Peru
And thinking of him was all she could do
And there she saw in an eagle’s nest
A diamond ring he stole from a prince’s chest
And so the sleeping eagle did not know
That the ring now belonged to the flamingo
And so she prayed for the next monsoon
And wished upon stars and the moon
When she would return to the Emperor of Snow
That lost and found flamingo
