The Princess and the Donkey

There was a princess who was locked in a tower
And it was sealed with magic power
The one who would set her free
Would marry this fair princess, you see
But many men have seeked the right key
Princes have tried endlessly
Sultans have searched to no avail
Kings have tried, but all did fail
Lords have searched the Holy Grail
But none have lived to tell the tale
And the princess turned pale,
“Will there be any one to set me free?
It can’t be that hard, can it be?”
The door was set on fire
Strongmen did perspire
But not even with their manly power
Could they knock down the door from that tower
There came many lumberjacks
But the door bowed before no axe
Keys of gold could not uphold
And so the summer turned cold
And not a single man could find a key
To unlock that door and set her free
Not even a hole could be made
No force on earth could raid
That hardy door and kick it down
And the princess did frown
Taking off her crown
“Maybe this tower will be my grave
It’s a beautiful one, oh, death, you knave!”
But then a young peasant man whose mother was dying
Got up from his knees and stopped crying
When he heard how other men were trying
To free that princess whose lips were the color of gold
And would turn the lips of the one she kissed it was told
Golden too, and whatever object kissed turned to solid gold too
He could use the money to buy the medicine, if the tale was true
So he rode his donkey to that tower
And climbed the staircase within the hour
And he with his fist knocked at the door
But not a dent did he bore
He tried to kick it down
Even the doorknob seemed to frown
But then the boy told his noble steed
“Kick it down!” he decreed.
And his donkey with his back legs kicked
And all of a sudden something clicked
The donkey kicked down the door flat
And the princess was free, and that was that
And the princess embraced the boy with a kiss
His lips turned golden too, sweet bliss!
Only those she kissed would have lips of gold
A man that tried to kiss her would turn to solid gold, I am told
And he kissed brooms, and buckets, even a ship’s sail
They all turned to solid gold, he found his Holy Grail
And he saved his mother from death
And she lived many more years, in good breath
And that castle became their own
And with their love they were never alone
The princess said, “I put a spell on that door,
King, and Sultans and Lords I abhor
They think they are so big
They wear their crowns like pigs
All day they stare at their jewels and rings
Their heads are heavy, I hate Kings
They think their gold makes them rich
If I was poor, they’d think I was a witch
But I enchanted the door that no power
Of a key or strength from a man could devour
That door that could only be open and set free
By a humble servant, a donkey.
A donkey is better than any key,
Kings are rich, but their hearts are empty
But you have set me free
And you are the one I shall love and marry.”
He said, “but I am poor, I am no prince.”
“From your heart, that thought you must rinse.

You think you can only be a prince if you wear a crown?
That thought from your soul must drown.
Not all angels have wings, not all princes wear crowns
Some wear them on their lips
That is where Death drowns
And Time stands still
For kisses are like a magic pill
They warm the heart
And get rid of Winter’s chill,
And with heaven in your heart
Does it fill
And each kiss makes a star fall
And the moon melt
When our kisses call.
Our kisses give the sun her light
That is what makes her shine bright
Every star blooms from the seeds of our kisses at night
Angels envy at the sight
We may not have wings like the angels above
But they will never know such love
And when they cry
The moon wanes above in the sky
Though we cannot fly
Our hearts can and love gives
Our hearts wings
And we can never die
We escape Death’s ethereal eye
Time’s hands cannot catch us by
For Love is faster than the speed of light
A heart could fall just in one night,
And when that door fell I fell for you,
You are a prince, there’s nothing you can do
There is no amount of gold
That compares with your kiss
And the way you hold me in your hand
But Kings, oh, they will don’t understand!”
The donkey watched as they did kiss
“If only Kings thought like this.”
And it was seen her hair turned to gold
In the sunlight’s kiss it was told
And at night it turned black
At dawn it turned golden back

But one strand of her golden hair
In a river or sea turned it golden there
And whatever objects touched that sea
Turned to solid gold, you see
Even pirate ships could sail upon it and fly
High up into the sky
To the land where angels with their hearts of gold
Yawn at dawn and make the sun rise, I am told
Their yawning mouths open Dawn’s golden gate
And the moon descends to her dark fate
And with their golden voices they sing
And wound the night sky with morning
