Mozzarella Moon

An astronaut in outer space
Had a shock come over his face
When he stepped upon the moon
His heart did nearly swoon
He could not believe his sight
For he saw a mouse that night
Crying there upon the moon
It felt like a Sunday morning cartoon
He saw the mouse weep
That poor mouse could not sleep
The astronaut asked, “what are you doing way up here,
All alone on this silver sphere?”
This lonely mouse began to speak
As a tear fell down his whiskered cheek
“I thought the moon was made of cheese
I used to stare at it from the trees
I wished upon it every night
To one day hold it tight
I spent my days wishing to be up there
But my friends and family did sneer
I wanted to touch that mozzarella moon
Even though they thought me a buffoon
All my life I dreamed to touch that sky
And land upon that wheel of cheese up high
I crawled into a hot air balloon
But it did not fly me to the moon
So I jumped in a plane
But I only ended up in Spain
Then I saw a space rocket
And climbed into an astronaut’s pocket
And I was flown up to the moon at last
But when I touched it, my tears fell fast
The moon is not made out of cheese
I spent my whole life with this dreamer’s disease
All my life I was chasing a lie
All my nights I was staring up at the sky
I forgot that all my mirth
Was right there on the Earth

I missed weddings and birthdays
Because I was lost in the moon’s silver gaze
I wanted to be someone special, you know
I thought if I could touch that moon that did glow
And bring them back a piece of cheese from the sky
I would be remembered, I would never die
But all my dreams have been a lie,” said the mouse as he started to cry.
But the astronaut said with a tear in his eye,
“You are the first mouse ever to touch the sky
You were brave to even try
The moon might not be made out of cheese
But you listened to your heart, so please
Come back to Earth with me
You will find real cheese down there, you’ll see.”
The mouse traveled with the astronaut back to Earth
And he had regained all his mirth
For in every TV millions of eyes could see
That a mouse had traveled to the moon successfully
And in every newspaper delivered to every house
a headline printed “The moon meets the mouse!”
All his family was so proud
And once in a while he daydreams on a cloud
But for the rest of his life he soon found
The greatest things are found right here on the ground
